GAME WRITING

Sewer Rats

May 2024

Sewer Rats is a dystopian visual novel where you play as a young teen struggling to find your humanity in a world wrought with inequality, violence, and hopelessness thanks to your robotic overlords.

  • Awarded for Inclusive Design at IEEE's 2024 GameSIG because of the team’s attention to representation within every aspect of the play experience.

  • As lead for this project, I managed our team of four incredible women, resolved any and all issues, as well as wrote and edited alongside two other writers. Thanks to our efforts, our game is complete and available on itch.io!

  • This sample exhibits my fluency in writing morally complex stories with authentic representation, putting the player first, and balancing a large cast of diverse characters.

Season of Love:
Knight at the Opera

December 2023

An official installment in StoryLoom's Shared World Season of Love, this regency story follows Aurelia Knight on her rise to fame as an opera star and her scandalous romance with her patron that could destroy her career.

  • Written during my internship with Pixelberry Studios, I received mentorship and feedback from senior team members and wrote collaboratively with other interns.

  • Developed StoryLoom's Shared World initiative through expanding and defining the Season of Love IP and showcasing StoryLoom's potential with Knight at the Opera.

  • This sample exhibits my fluency in enthralling players with a swoon-worthy romance, writing witty dialogue, and blending gameplay into a narrative-heavy game.

The Four Horsegirls
of the Apocalypse

May 2024

"The Fourhorsemen of the Apocalypse" by Viktor Vasnetsov, but pink

Concept material and story bible for The Four Horsegirls of the Apocalypse, a feminist, post-apocalyptic RPG that follows the daughters of the Four Horsemen as they bring about another new age.

  • For my creative writing capstone, I fleshed out this game concept and organized it with Notion to showcase how I've grown at Chapman both in terms of storytelling talent and finding confidence in my own voice.

  • My motivation for this project was to make a "hard-core" game for a female audience in order to introduce women to more difficult gaming in a space where they're not harmfully represented or ridiculed.

  • This sample exhibits my fluency in writing cutscenes and worldbuilding documents for a video game, ability to undertake big projects independently, and how to craft gameplay and narrative in harmony.

PROSE

The Comet Moth

August 2022

The Comet Moth is the fantasy graphic novel I wrote for Chapman's Writing the Graphic Novel course. The story follows Rue, a florist who’s one chance at restoring her lost magic from the Moth Plague is working with the pretentious wizard who got her expelled from school to secretly raise a magical moth caterpillar. While writing this, I kept in mind how the story would be interpreted as solely images and solely dialogue to ensure the plot is fully conveyed when text and image is combined.

Elle and Lenore

October 2023

This gothic short story centers around a pair of twins named Elle and Lenore and their time at an orphanage where an ominous "we" considers them malevolent. Twins typically refer to themselves collectively, but I counter that in this story to create an "us vs them" narrative. I specifically wanted to tackle the evil twins trope which is used to harmfully other-ize twins. As a twin myself, it's important to me to represent twins authentically and critique depictions of twins in media through my work.
